Description
Hawaiian Roll French Toast with sweet King’s Hawaiian bread, topped with tropical fruits and syrup. A quick, comforting crowd-pleaser!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (12 rolls) King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls
- 4 large eggs
- ¾ cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (for cooking)
Instructions
- Step 1: Prepare the custard mixture In a wide, shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined. The mixture should be uniform in color with no visible egg streaks. Set aside for a moment to let the flavors meld while you prepare the rolls.
- Step 2: Prepare the Hawaiian rolls Take your package of Hawaiian sweet rolls and, keeping them connected, slice horizontally through the middle as if making sandwich buns. Then cut the top and bottom slabs into quarters or sixths (depending on your preference for bite size). This technique keeps the rolls partially connected, making them easier to dip and flip during cooking.
- Step 3: Dip the roll sections Working with one section at a time, quickly dip the roll sections into the custard mixture, about 2-3 seconds per side. Remember, Hawaiian rolls absorb liquid much faster than regular bread! Place the dipped sections on a clean plate while you prepare to cook.
- Step 4: Cook to golden perfection Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and allow it to melt completely. Place several sections of the dipped Hawaiian rolls in the pan, being careful not to overcrowd. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown, then gently flip and cook for another 2 minutes. Transfer to a warm plate and repeat with remaining butter and roll sections.
- Step 5: Serve immediately For the ultimate Hawaiian Roll French Toast experience, serve immediately while hot, with warm maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, or fresh berries. The crisp exterior and custardy interior are at their peak when freshly cooked.
