Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup sweet Marsala wine (or white wine)
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1 egg white for sealing
- 16 oz mascarpone cheese, room temperature
- 1 cup heavy cream, cold
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons espresso or strong coffee, cooled
- 2 tablespoons coffee liqueur (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting)
- 2 tablespoons grated dark chocolate
Instructions
- Step 1: Prepare the Cannoli Dough In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter cubes and work them into the dry ingredients using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center and add the egg, Marsala wine, and vinegar. Mix gradually, pulling in the dry ingredients until a rough dough forms. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 2-3 minutes until smooth. Shape into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Step 2: Roll and Cut the Dough Divide the chilled dough into two portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll one portion to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use a 4-inch round cookie cutter to cut circles from the dough. Roll each circle into an oval shape, stretching it slightly. Repeat with remaining dough. You should get approximately 12-16 shells.
- Step 3: Form and Fry the Shells Wrap each oval of dough around a cannoli form, overlapping the edges. Brush the overlapping area with egg white to seal. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Carefully lower the dough-wrapped forms into the hot oil, 2-3 at a time, and fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes, turning occasionally. Using tongs, remove to paper towels to drain. When cool enough to handle, gently slide the shells off the forms. Let cool completely.
- Step 4: Create the Tiramisu Filling In a medium bowl, beat the mascarpone cheese with sugar until smooth. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gradually fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture. Add the cooled espresso, coffee liqueur (if using), and vanilla extract, folding gently until fully incorporated. Transfer the mixture to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Step 5: Assemble Your Tiramisu Cannoli Just before serving, pipe the tiramisu filling into both ends of each cannoli shell. Dust the filled cannoli with cocoa powder and sprinkle with grated dark chocolate. For an extra touch, dip the ends into chopped chocolate or crushed chocolate-covered espresso beans.
